The Happiness Trap: Happiness for the Rest of Us

A frustrated victim of motivational speakers, Arena begins her look at the happiness industry with us while reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. She will take us back to a Millionaire Mind Seminar where her quest to live her dreams brought her to a standstill with debt, legal trouble, and living in her worst nightmare - geographically, even.

Amy Arena holds a B.A. in American Studies from San Francisco State University. A respected actress and world-renown singer (at least underground) , Arena has written several peer-appreciated, but not-yet-produced plays, has published poetry and won awards for her short stories on websites that no longer exist, and produced an album that she can't afford to hype with the finesse of the happiness experts.

Once in a while, this email show’s up in my box sent from me entitled, “The Secret.”  I don’t exactly know how I set this reminder up, but I do recall it was a few years ago.  I thought I deleted them all from this memo service who’s name I can’t even recall.  That’s how invested in my future I am.

I decided to open it up.  Sometimes these things inspire me.  Sometimes, they send me into a downward spiral of self-loathing.  No biggie.  This one could’ve gone either way.  The first sentences are quoted, I guess, from “The Secret” or Abraham, the Secret Freaks.    “When you begin to look for evidence that life is ultimately kind, you will start to find the evidence that this is true. When you begin to appreciate that every experience in life is a blessing, you will start to receive unimaginable blessings.”

Later down the page I read, ” I want to be one of the highest paid public figures in this country by March 1, 09.”

Ha haaaa haa ahaa ahccchik ha ha haa aah ah eh eh hem.  I meant it, too.  You should read the laundry list of lofty goals I aimed for.  Those from 2008 haven’t even been realized.

It’s a wonderful cooincidence that I accomplished so much yesterday by launching a new website, a new video, and a fully digital download of my new LP.  If all I managed to do was cook and go to the post office, I would have been wailing rather than laughing at my life-long, unfounded ambition and optimism.
